The concentration of a pesticide found in the groundwater depends on the amount of pesticide reaching the soil surface, how it travels within the soil, and how quickly the pesticide is broken down. For example, a high application rate may lead to a high concentration of a pesticide in the soil. Then, if the pesticide is slow to breakdown, it may eventually contaminate nearby groundwater.
